Isaiah 40:26
Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.

Our Vocation: Our Sanctification

Since my son was born, he has spent almost every Saturday night of his life (he is 13 now), listening to me read my manuscript for the Sunday sermon. I always do that so that if a child can get it, and my wife understands it, then I am likely to reach some children and some women (this is not to be perforative, it is just that as a "mature" male, I need help!). In the meantime, he has heard an amazing number of sermons. To the degree that they have been true to the Word, his soul has been flooded with the truth of the Word of God. That will, one day, either bless him or condemn him, and I believe that he is following thank the Lord. But he has heard more than most. And that is part of how each of our family members are impacted by our ministry. If you are a minister or preparing to become one, you surely know this. The ministry of the Word is so pervasive in our lives, so consuming, that our families are inevitably a part of our ministries in one way or another. St. Paul told Timothy:  "Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers" (1 Tim. 4.16).  And so our vocation becomes our sanctification. Our vocation becomes the sanctification of our families. Oh the blessings of the Gospel.   "Praise be to Your Lord Christ. Praise Your name for ministering to our children and our wives through Your Word in our home."  The wonderful thing about our vocation becoming sanctification for our families is that it is not just limited to ministers. Any believer can have the same powerful impact. Just read the Word in your home. Just pray the names of your children to the Father and let the children hear. Just live our Christ in front of your kids, along with confessions of your sins, and crying out in earnest for God's help.   Our vocation our sanctification. The church in the home and the home in the Church. This is our work. This is our calling. This is our privilege.

Reflections

“The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s own or real life. The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life - the life God is sending one day by day.”
- C.S. Lewis
